Halmstad is growing, and the central city needs traffic relief. The municipality is therefore planning a new bridge across the Nissan River, with connecting roads, Söderbron. The bridge is also a prerequisite for the development of areas such as Tullkammarkajen and the Kattegatt district.
The proposal was developed by Inhouse Tech in close collaboration with the architects &Rundquist, landscape architects Sydväst and lighting designers Black ljusdesign. The company AnyViz was commissioned for the visualisations.
The jury’s motivation reads as follows:
“With the winning proposal ‘Portal’, Halmstad gains a softly shaped landmark that is visible from afar without obstructing the view. A resilient, flowing double arch in steel creates, as the name promises, an airy portal across the Nissan and offers those travelling across the bridge beautiful views of the sea and the inner city.
The bridge and its richly planted embankments, together with the urban spaces on the eastern and western sides of the Nissan, are connected with the surrounding neighbourhoods, the Söder nature area and the quays. Well‑programmed and vibrant places are created on both sides of the river. A variety of stairs, ramps and platforms offer different ways of moving to and from the bridge.”
Winning the competition means that Inhouse Tech, together with its partners, will be commissioned to design the bridge and its connections on both sides of the Nissan. The design phase will result in tender documentation for a design‑and‑build contract and is expected to begin at the end of January 2026.
We thank Halmstad Municipality for the trust and look forward to an exciting collaboration to help connect the city.
