Inhouse Tech’s Building division has had the privilege of helping to develop a new residential block with student housing opposite Chalmers’ main entrance in Johanneberg. This is located directly adjacent to the historic hospital buildings in Holtermanska. As structural designers, our focus has been to create a technically robust solution that also supports the architectural vision.
On behalf of Chalmers Studentbostäder, Inhouse Tech has produced the structural system design for four buildings. Three of these are point‑block towers with varying heights of 12 to 16 storeys. The new block will contain a total of 386 flats, providing accommodation for nearly 500 students. The project also includes a commercial building planned to house a restaurant and office space.
One of the key challenges has been that part of the building right for one of the towers lies above an existing transformer station that cannot be subjected to additional load. As a result, one corner of the building cantilevers over the transformer using angled supports. The area in front of the transformer must also remain accessible for lorries, and a service vehicle must be able to enter and turn around. This means that the building footprint at ground level is smaller than the upper floors, and parts of the structure rest on external columns.
We are particularly pleased to be working on a project located so close to our own home ground and to contribute to the student housing of the future. We look forward to proudly following the results once the buildings are completed.
The project team from Inhouse Tech consists of Mats Schöneck, Andrea Alexandersson and Erik Svensson.
